10 MYTHS ABOUT OBESITY

The first step to combat obesity is to stop believing in old popular sayings that science has been demolishing. The Colombian Clinic for Obesity and Metabolism compiled the 10 most common among its patients. 

People often complain about not being able to lose weight, and this is because they do not have a true understanding of what it means to be obese, the causes, and much less the correct way to treat this disease. Here we summarize some myths that were born decades ago, in which people still believe.

  1. A FAT CHILD IS A HEALTHY CHILD: Nothing could be more wrong and dangerous. It is proven that obese children will be obese in adulthood, they grow up with low self-esteem and are prone to suffer from heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and thyroid problems.
  2. DIETS HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT: No disease can be fought with diet! Obesity is a disease caused by 60 different diseases that people don't know they have. Therefore, it requires specialized treatment.
  3. THE BELLY IS SEXY:It's a fact, the size of the belly is directly proportional to heart disease. Not sexy at all.
  4. BARIATRICIS THE SOLUTION:In addition to being a high-risk surgery that leaves serious after-effects for the patient, 60% of those operated on regain their weight by not attacking the real problem.
  5. EXERCISE HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT: Similarly, no disease is cured with exercise. Although it helps improve the quality of life, exercise is nothing more than a palliative for those who are overweight because they will always be fighting against the scale.
  6. EATING A LOT MAKES YOU FAT:How many people do we know who are “good eaters” and maintain their weight? When there are failures in the body, the ability to burn calories is lost and these are stored, producing excess weight. The solution is not to stop eating but to cure these failures.
